Ten years ago, a small group of bereaved parents came together to discuss how they could support families grieving the loss of a loved one with deafblindness. From those conversations grew the first and only virtual peer-to-peer grief support group specifically for families whose children with deafblindness have died.
These web-based meetings provide parents who have experienced the loss of a child with a safe and supportive space to process their grief, connect with others who understand their journey, and learn coping strategies that have helped fellow parents. Meetings are held on Wednesday evenings, for 90 minutes, at 5:30 p.m. PT, 6:30 p.m. MT, 7:30 p.m. CT, and 8:30 p.m. ET.
Participants are asked to commit to the full seven-month series, which includes 10 meetings. Enrollment is free, and each participant receives a packet outlining the topics that will be covered during the series, along with suggested resources and readings.
Several CHARGE families have participated in these meetings and found the understanding, connection, and community they needed to navigate their grief while moving forward in their lives.
One CHARGE mother shared:
“The best advice I received was that the only way to get through grief is by grieving. I didn’t know on the day my child died that joy and pain could live together so seamlessly in my remembrances of him, and that I would welcome the pain if they were a package deal.”
Another parent reflected:
“[The Grief Group] has given me an opportunity to speak about my child with people who truly understand.”
The next series begins on September 30, 2026. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact Melanie Knapp at [email protected] or register online.
