Meet María Alejandra

Hi, I’m María Alejandra. I’m 32 years old, originally from Colombia, and I now live in New York with my mom, dad, and brother. I have CHARGE syndrome.

I am very grateful that my parents have always taken good care of me while also giving me the opportunity to be independent. They have supported me without overprotecting me, and that has made a big difference in my life. Living in the United States has taught me that there are many areas where we can learn to be independent, and I am very happy with how much I have grown.

My time at Helen Keller was incredibly helpful and taught me so many things. Today, I work in a restaurant, and I feel strong, capable, and proud of all the things I can do. My experiences have shown me that people with CHARGE can accomplish so much when we are given the right support and opportunities.

I want other adults with CHARGE to know that we can learn, grow, work, and become more independent. We should believe in ourselves and in what we are capable of achieving.

Thank you to the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation for always being there for us and for your continued support.

Sending hugs! ❤️
