The Foundation - Director of Outreach

My name is Sheri Stanger and I was recently hired by the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation as the new Director of Outreach.  I live in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY with my husband, Neal and my 2 children, Megan (17) and Matthew (13).  Megan was born in 1993 and 10 months later, diagnosed with CHARGE syndrome.  I received invaluable support and information from the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation in those early uncertain days and began my journey as a parent advocate.  Before becoming a parent of a child with CHARGE, I received my Master of Education and Master of Arts degrees in Psychological Counseling.  My professional background is in Rehabilitation Counseling in addition to being a Certified School Counselor.  Prior to my role as a parent advocate, I worked for 5 years as a School Counselor in a school for children with visual impairments, deafblindness and developmental disabilities.  I spent the last 12 years as an active board member and special advisor to the National Family Association for Deaf-Blind.  I also served as President for 4 of those years and served on the Public Relations, Nominations, Affiliations and Legislative Committees.  I have worked closely with the National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness, State Deaf-Blind Projects, Helen Keller National Center, National Coalition on Deafblindness, the Office of Special Education Programs and with many state deaf-blind family organizations.

I am a staunch believer in parent run organizations and believe connections amongst parents are critical as we navigate our way through the maze of CHARGE syndrome.  Support for this organization by parents and professionals are critical to the mission of the Foundation.  As the Director of Outreach, it is my hope that we will increase our membership, increase connections to each other, develop our relationships with other family, consumer and professional organizations and expand our volunteer base.  I am excited to be working for this wonderful organization and I look forward to connecting with all of you as we work to improve the lives for all of our incredible children with CHARGE syndrome.
